NuFace Review: My Before And After Photos Using The Microcurrent Tool (2024)

When it comes to skincare devices, I’ve tried pretty much everything that claims to deliver a more youthful glow to my face—but many products fail miserably on that promise and instead sit in my bathroom drawers collecting dust. This is where my love for the NuFace Trinity+ microcurrent device comes in: I splurged on the tool a few years ago and have been using it religiously ever since. The facial toning device features microcurrent technology to tighten and contour the appearance of the face and neck, while working to smooth age lines and sculpt facial muscles over time. I love that you can see a visible difference right away; my skin is brighter, firmer and more toned after each use.

At $395 (for the starter kit), the NuFace Trinity+ doesn’t come cheap, but it’s more cost-effective than regular trips to the spa or dermatologist. After using it for several years, I can confidently say that it’s a great accompaniment to my daily skincare routine and is worth the investment. Whether you’re seeking long-term results like tightening or lessening the appearance of wrinkles, or just want to look lifted and toned for a same-day event, this is an excellent pick. Read on for my in-depth NuFace review.

How The NuFace Microcurrent Device Works

The Trinity+ tool uses microcurrent technology to stimulate facial muscles, resulting in a firmer, more youthful appearance with consistent use. By sending low-level currents through layers of skin on the face and neck, it works to tone and tighten the underlying facial muscles, in turn firming the areas of the face (jawline, cheeks, forehead) that tend to sag over time. In short, it’s like a customized fitness routine for your face.

The NuFace Trinity+ is unique in that it offers three levels of power: The skin-tightening mode helps to blur fine lines and wrinkles; the instant lift mode helps tone and contour; and the pro-toning mode targets the deeper layers of the skin for long-term lifting. And unlike other NuFace devices, the Trinity+ offers an added bonus for those looking for more oomph—the boost button, which you can push at any point while using the tool for 25% more microcurrent. (This feature is great for areas that need extra attention.)

A Trio Of Easy-To-Use Attachments

You can buy the NuFace Trinity+ Starter Kit, which includes the device and main Facial Trainer attachment plus the conductive Aqua Gel and applicator brush, but I recommend the Complete Set, which has all of the above along with the dual-pronged Lip & Eye attachment and Wrinkle Reducer LED attachment.

The Lip & Eye attachment helps lift the eyebrow area and nasolabial folds, contour and depuff the eye area and reduce fine lines such as crow’s feet, according to the brand. The Wrinkle Reducer attachment works to smooth fine facial lines and promote circulation using a red LED light. To cycle between treatments, you can easily pop the current attachment out of the device and inserting the next one in a matter of seconds.

How To Use The NuFace Trinity+ Device

I prefer to use my Trinity+ in the evenings after a relaxing shower, as opposed to during often-chaotic morning hours. I start with an oil-free cleanser and pat dry with a towel before lightly misting the brand’s Supercharged IonPlex face mist onto my face, neck and chest for some light moisture. Then, I use the applicator brush to apply a thick layer of the Aqua Gel activator to my entire face and neck.

Once my skin is prepped, I turn the NuFace on (using the strongest setting now that my skin is used to the sensation) with the Facial Trainer attachment and glide it over my skin in an upward motion. I find it helpful to go over each area of my face several times. The brand recommends using the device at least 5 minutes per day, 5 days per week when starting out. I use my mine between 3 to 6 days per week, depending on my schedule. The handy NuFace app offers customized routines depending on your skincare goals, so if you want to focus on your neck one day, and fine lines the following day, there’s a routine to cater to your needs.

After using the Facial Trainer attachment, I switch to the Wrinkle Reducer tool to target fine lines and wrinkles. It glides smoothly over the face with a red LED light and zero stinging sensation—it’s oddly soothing. If I have extra time, I’ll throw the Lip & Eye attachment on to reduce those pesky under-eye bags that plague me every time I look in the mirror.

The Trinity+ automatically shuts off after 20 minutes, at which point I nestle it into the wireless charging cradle. Afterwards, I wipe off the gel and continue with my regular nighttime skincare routine, which consists of serums, a moisturizer and an eye cream for extra hydration.

Is The NuFace Trinity+ Microcurrent Device Worth It?

I’ve used a NuFace device for more than 3 years—and the Trinity+ for over a month now—and I can confidently say that it’s a worthwhile investment. I’ve noticed a significant difference in my skin when I consistently use the device, and I plan to use it for years to come. My skin is tighter, more toned and feels more youthful after each use, and it has quickly become an essential part of my skincare routine. I also appreciate that the complete set comes with three attachments, a conductive gel and a handy applicator brush.

My Expertise

As a longtime digital editor covering beauty for nearly two decades and a dedicated user of the NuFace Trinity+, I’m well-equipped to give a thorough review. I’m as satisfied with the NuFace facial toning device today as I was when I first started using it 3 years ago, and I haven’t come across a better FDA-cleared microcurrent tool yet. It delivers consistent results, both immediate and long-term—my NuFace before and after photos show noticeable differences in my skin.

How I Tested The NuFace Trinity+

While evaluating the NuFace Trinity+ device, I focused my research on ease of use, battery life and—most importantly—efficacy. I started by evaluating the results immediately after each use, and also studying them over a span of 6 weeks for the Trinity+, specifically. I even traveled with the device on a 2-week trip to Italy to test the battery life, how much space it took up in my suitcase and whether or not it was flagged at security or customs (much to my relief, it was not).

Over the 6-week period, I experimented with using the Trinity+ between 5-20 minutes a day, covering all areas of my face with the device and its additional attachments, including the LED Wrinkle Reducer and dual-pronged Lip & Eye attachment. I used the accompanying My NuFace app to guide my daily routine, trying the 5-Minute Facial-Lift routine, the Advanced 15-Minute Facial Lift, the Wrinkle Reducer Facial (21 minutes) and many others. I took a significant amount of before and after photos to see if I could spot any differences—and I did.

To test the battery life, I left the device off of the charging cradle for an extended period of time until it died. Left uncharged and used once daily, the battery lasted for 2 weeks before I needed to plug it back into the charger. (Pro tip: If you want to travel with the NuFace, you can safely leave the charger at home). The brand recommends charging it for 12 hours, or overnight, if the power is completely drained on the battery.

Does The NuFace Device Really Work?

NuFace devices use microcurrent technology to essentially give your facial muscles a workout and tone your face, which helps improve facial contours, skin tone and the appearance of wrinkles. “By tightening your muscles, it can definitely give you a quick lift temporarily,” says dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dr. Margarita Lolis. “Results may vary between patients, given anatomical and functional differences.”

Do Dermatologists Recommend NuFace?

Yes, experts often recommend microcurrent technology as a complementary at-home treatment. “NuFace is a nice adjunct to in-office procedures,” Lolis says. However, she says expectations should be managed by the fact that it shows very subtle, conservative results.

How Long Do NuFace Results Last?

According to Lolis, the results from using the NuFace device are not permanent and can vary in duration. Regular and consistent use is required to maintain the benefits, with the brand suggesting daily use for the first 60 days followed by maintenance sessions two to three times a week. If use is discontinued, the improvements in skin tone and elasticity may gradually diminish over time.

What Are The Cons Of NuFace?

Downsides of the NuFace may be the cost (especially depending on how often you use it) and time spent using it, as well as variability in results. Consistent and regular use is needed for optimal results, which may be time-consuming for some. In addition, results can vary widely and not everyone may experience significant improvements, Lolis says.

Is It OK To Use NuFace Every Day?

NuFace is safe to use daily and is recommended at this frequency for optimal results, especially during the initial period of 60 days. After this period, many users switch to maintenance mode, using the device two to three times a week.
